Piastri Jokes About Jeremy Clarkson Lesson Despite Aus GP Setback

Share

Oscar Piastri’s home race at Albert Park did not go as planned. The McLaren driver, chasing teammate Lando Norris for the lead, slid off the track and into the grass in the final sector after a heavy late rain shower. The mishap not only cost him a podium finish but also left him a lap down, ultimately finishing in ninth place after benefiting from a late Safety Car period.

“I tried to push a bit too much, I guess. In those conditions, it was very difficult to judge just how slippery it was going to be,” Piastri explained after the race. “I could see Lando going off in front of me, but I was already in the corner, so there wasn’t much I could do to slow down.”

A Lesson in Reverse

Unable to drive forward on the wet grass, Piastri had to rely on his McLaren’s reverse gear to regain traction and get back on track. Reflecting on his unexpected recovery tactic, he humorously credited an unlikely source for his success.

“Tried to go forwards and couldn’t, so good thing I spent some time in the off-season trying to learn how to reverse a tractor on Jeremy Clarkson’s farm—I think it came in handy today,” he quipped.

Mixed Emotions Despite a Strong Weekend

Despite the setback, Piastri was quick to highlight his overall performance. For nearly 56 laps, he maintained a strong pace, and his efforts, along with those of the team, showed promise for the season ahead.

“I was very proud of the job I did,” he said. “Obviously, I’m disappointed with the mistake, but it doesn’t take away from how strong the whole weekend’s been for the team and myself. I feel like I’ve done a good job all weekend, so it would be pessimistic of me to write off the entire event because of one mistake.”

Looking Ahead

While teammate Lando Norris celebrated victory at his home race, Piastri’s humorous take on his mishap and his acknowledgment of the learning curve underscore his determination to improve. The incident serves as both a reminder of the unpredictable nature of racing in challenging conditions and a testament to the resilience required to bounce back from mistakes.

With the season still in its early stages, all eyes will be on Piastri to see how he leverages these hard-earned lessons—whether on the track or, occasionally, with a nod to unconventional training methods inspired by Jeremy Clarkson’s farm.
