FDA Warns Against HCG Weight-Loss Products

Share

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to consumers to avoid using human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) weight-loss products, which are typically sold in the form of oral drops, pellets, and sprays. These products, often found online, at weight loss clinics, and in some retail stores, are marketed with promises of rapid weight loss and metabolic “resetting” when paired with severely restrictive calorie diets.

HCG and Its Lack of Efficacy for Weight Loss

HCG is a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy, but it is not approved for weight loss. While the FDA has approved HCG as a prescription drug for treating female infertility and other medical conditions, it has not approved the hormone for use in weight loss. Products marketed with HCG often recommend a very low-calorie diet, typically around 500 calories per day, and claim the hormone will help users lose 20 to 30 pounds within 30 to 40 days.

However, the FDA stresses that any weight loss achieved through these products is a result of the extreme calorie restriction, not the HCG itself. Carolyn Becker, Director of the Office of Unapproved Drugs and Labeling Compliance, emphasized that there is no substantial evidence to support the claims that HCG boosts weight loss or alters fat distribution.

Dangers of Very Low-Calorie Diets

The FDA also warns that living on 500 calories a day is highly dangerous and can lead to serious health risks, including gallstones, electrolyte imbalances, and irregular heartbeats. These risks are compounded by the lack of essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and proteins, which are vital for bodily functions. While very low-calorie diets may be prescribed in specific medical situations, such as for obesity, they must be closely monitored by healthcare professionals to avoid life-threatening side effects.

FDA Advice for Consumers

The FDA advises anyone currently using HCG weight-loss products to stop using them immediately and discard any remaining products. Individuals are encouraged to consult healthcare professionals for guidance on safe and sustainable weight loss methods.

The FDA urges healthcare professionals and patients to report any adverse effects related to the use of HCG products to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.
