Michelle Trachtenberg, the actor best known for her roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, died of complications from diabetes, the New York City medical examiner’s office has confirmed.

The 39-year-old was found dead in February, following a recent liver transplant, according to a report by NBC News. At the time, the cause of her death had not been publicly disclosed.

Trachtenberg’s career began in early childhood, launching into the spotlight at the age of three through commercials, before landing roles on Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete & Pete and the long-running soap All My Children.

Her breakthrough came in 1996 when she played the titular role in Harriet the Spy, acting alongside Rosie O’Donnell and J Smith-Cameron. In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Trachtenberg reflected on the experience: “There was a lot required of me … I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity.”

A Bold and Diverse Career

Michelle Trachtenberg’s range as an actor became increasingly evident throughout her career. From the irreverent teen comedy EuroTrip to the gritty and critically acclaimed Mysterious Skin by Gregg Araki, she consistently sought out diverse and challenging roles.

Speaking about Mysterious Skin, a film tackling difficult themes such as trauma and identity, Trachtenberg once remarked:

“I was this girl who had done glitzy, PG-themed stuff and here’s Gregg Araki, director of Doom Generation. We sat down, had a cup of coffee and I said: ‘You’re probably not gonna hire me, but this is what I got, this is what I feel. If you’re willing to take the chance, I’m willing to go there with you.’ It was the most exhilarating experience I’ve had as an actress.”

Her performances frequently earned praise for their emotional depth and fearless vulnerability, particularly in more dramatic roles that defied her early image as a teen star.

Remembering Michelle

Following her passing, tributes poured in from co-stars, friends, and fans alike.

Blake Lively, her Gossip Girl castmate, shared heartfelt words:

“She was electricity … You knew when she entered a room because the vibration changed. Everything she did, she did 200%.”

Succession star J Smith-Cameron, who had worked with Trachtenberg early in her career, wrote:

“She was always very warm toward me. I feel very shocked and unsettled to hear of her passing.”

Perhaps the most emotional tribute came from Sarah Michelle Gellar, her on-screen sister in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Quoting a line from the show, Gellar said:

“Michelle, listen to me … Listen. I love you. I will always love you. The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live … for you.”

A Personal Battle

While her battle with diabetes had not been widely publicized during her life, news of its role in her death has added a new layer of poignancy to her story. Friends and colleagues have noted that despite personal health challenges, Trachtenberg remained deeply committed to her craft.

Known for her wit, resilience, and fierce commitment to her roles, Michelle Trachtenberg leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire young actors — particularly those making the difficult transition from child stardom to more mature, boundary-pushing work.

As the entertainment world mourns the loss of a unique and fearless voice, fans continue to celebrate the performances that made Michelle Trachtenberg a singular presence on screen.
