Match Report: Newcastle United 5–0 Crystal Palace

Share

Newcastle United continued their irresistible form with a commanding 5–0 victory over Crystal Palace at St. James’ Park, marking their sixth consecutive win across all competitions and climbing into third place in the Premier League.

Despite manager Eddie Howe still recovering from pneumonia, assistant coach Jason Tindall once again took charge on the touchline and oversaw a performance brimming with fluid attacking football, relentless energy, and defensive steel.

First Half: Ruthless and Relentless

The Magpies were unchanged from the side that humbled Manchester United, and they came flying out of the traps. Within the opening minute, Jacob Murphy’s cross narrowly evaded both Alexander Isak and Joelinton in front of goal.

It set the tone for the half. Bruno Guimarães – the creative heartbeat throughout – played a sublime through ball to release Murphy, whose cut-back to Isak was met with a smart save from Dean Henderson.

The pressure built and in the 22nd minute, Murphy got the goal his lively play deserved. A slick move saw Guimarães link with Kieran Trippier, whose line ball found Murphy. The winger lashed a shot from a tight angle that crashed in at the far post – an audacious and clinical finish.

Crystal Palace had a rare chance to equalise when VAR awarded a penalty after Nick Pope collided with Chris Richards. But Eberechi Eze’s stuttering spot-kick lacked conviction and Pope saved comfortably.

Newcastle made Palace pay immediately. Just two minutes later, a cross from Harvey Barnes – set up by Tino Livramento – took a wicked deflection off Marc Guéhi and looped past a helpless Henderson to make it 2–0.

The Magpies weren’t done. In stoppage time, Barnes added a third, finishing coolly with his left foot after a silky one-two between Guimarães and Sandro Tonali opened up the Palace defence. Moments later, a smart set-piece routine saw Trippier backheel to Murphy, whose cross found Fabian Schär to head home Newcastle’s fourth.

Second Half: Sealing the Statement Win

With a 4–0 cushion, Newcastle eased slightly but remained in control. Dean Henderson was called into action again to deny Isak after Dan Burn’s headed assist, but the Swede would not be denied for long.

In the 58th minute, Joelinton intercepted a careless pass from Maxence Lacroix, and Isak calmly slotted in his 24th goal of the campaign with typical poise to cap the performance.

Palace attempted a late response through substitute Eddie Nketiah, who hit the side netting and forced a stoppage-time save from Pope, but they were never truly in the contest. Newcastle’s defence held firm to record their 11th clean sheet of the league season.

Key Performers

  • Jacob Murphy – Scored one and assisted another in a man-of-the-match display down the right wing.
  • Bruno Guimarães – The metronome in midfield, orchestrating moves and combining brilliantly with Tonali and Trippier.
  • Harvey Barnes – Continued his rich vein of form with a goal and a dangerous cross that led to an own goal.
  • Alexander Isak – Notched his 24th goal of the season and constantly threatened the Palace backline.

Final Thoughts

This emphatic win further underlines Newcastle’s Champions League credentials and attacking prowess. With 9 goals in just four days and a solid defensive base, they’ve struck a perfect balance under Howe and Tindall. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly after a humbling afternoon on Tyneside.
